THE PALM PILOT - A COMPUTING MILESTONE

From Palm Medical Software to Palm Barcode Scanners, from Palm Pilot GPS to Palm Pilot Medical Dictionaries - This Little Marvel has Revolutionised So Many Areas of Computing

In this article I am going to talk about the Palm Pilot as a great reading tool. A Palm Pilot in your top pocket equals a bunch of books in your top pocket. And, if you know how to go about it, all of these books are free.

The step by step procedure is as follows:

1. Buy a Palm Vx through Ebay for about $100. The Palm Vx is good, as it is thin, light, has 8 megs of memory, a chargeable battery and many were sold, so a used one is cheap to buy. 8 megabytes of memory - isn't that a bit small? The answer is no. It will carry the complete works of Shakespeare and still leave room for a novel or two.

2. The Palm Vx will connect to your PC, which has several advantages, two of which concern us here. Firstly you can backup all your files to the PC by pressing the sync button on the Palm Vx cradle provided. Secondly you can download books from the internet and transfer them to your Palm Vx, also using the cradle.

3. Download via the internet a free program called dropbook. This will covert the free books that you download in text format from the Project Gutenberg Web Site to a format that the Palm Pilot will accept.

4. You are ready now to read to your heart's content. Carry it with you - you will always have a book to read when your friend is late. Not essential but useful - down load from the Palm Web Site a dictionary and a big bold font to make reading a little easier.
